What is Linux?

Linux is a free cross-platform operating system that comes with open source. Any user can modify the kernel and even implement their own distribution. Linux is based on a Unix system and is distributed as free software under the GNU General Public License.

Linux comes in the form of distributions for desktop and server applications that include the Linux kernel, as well as supporting tools and libraries (document and spreadsheet editors, multimedia players, database systems, etc.).
