What is JSON?

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is an easily readable text format created from a subset of the JavaScript programming language. The main area of use for JSON is the storage and exchange of structured information between a web application and a server.

The JSON format is an organized list of "key->value" pairs or a list of single values. In this list, the key is always a string enclosed in quotation marks, and the value can be of any type (string, number, logical expression, array or object). The key is followed by a colon, followed by a value. Key->value pairs are separated by commas. Pairs "key->value" are separated by commas. For example:

{"Key1":"one","Key2": 2,"Key3": true}
